What is Kafaarat Yameen?

Kafaarat Yameen is the expiation required when someone deliberately breaks an oath taken in Allah’s name. Oaths should only be made in Allah’s name; swearing by anything else is not permissible.

  • Kafaarat Yameen: £30 to feed 10 poor people per broken oath

Allah mentions in the Quran: “Allah will not punish you for what is unintentional in your oaths, but He will punish you for what your hearts have earned. And for its expiation, feed ten poor persons from the average of what you feed your own families, or clothe them, or give a slave his freedom. And whoever cannot afford that should fast for three days. This is the expiation for your oaths when you have sworn. And protect your oaths. Thus Allah makes clear to you His verses, that you may be grateful.”

(Surah Al-Ma’idah, 5:89)

  • Aqiqah for a boy is £150 (two animals), while for a girl, it is £75 (one animal)

How to Fulfil the Expiation for a Broken Oath

To atone for a broken oath, one must:

  1. Feed 10 poor people – Each person should receive food equivalent to what you usually eat, typically 1.5 kg of rice along with sauce or meat.
    • Alternatively, you can gather 10 people and serve them a meal.
  2. If feeding is not possible, the alternative is fasting for three days.

Crisis Aid can fulfil this obligation on your behalf at a cost of £3 per person, making the total for each broken oath £30.
